My relationship with the "KIT" 14-42mm For Oly individual I have an Olympus E-520 kit purchased along with two lenses - 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 and 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6. After using them for a while, I decided I wanted a zoom lens base faster low light conditions without flash. Olympus Zuiko chose the 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5 lens. When it arrived last week, I spent a day taking pictures in front kit lens 14-42mm. The camera mode is used in preference to the opening to allow for comparable settings. Image stabilization was provided. Here are my results.
Image quality and performance I found a minimal difference in image quality (color balance, contrast, sharpness, CA, etc.) between the two lenses in the same aperture, focal length and ISO settings. In the same setting, the images using the 14-54mm might have been slightly sharper, but not enough to notice, except in the major crops in time. However, the objective was 2.3 times faster, ie at the same time, ISO and aperture, a photo taken at 1 / 30 of a second with the 14-42mm can be taken in 1 / 80 to 14 -54mm. Also at the same shutter speed and aperture, an ISO 400 shot can be taken at ISO 200. The lower the ISO and / or a higher shutter speed can increase the quality of the image, because there is less noise and less likely sensor of the camera motion, respectively. With the necessary adjustments to different exposures decent in low light, images and crops with the 14-54mm were clearly better. Bokeh is also better.
I found the focus speed and accuracy over the same between the two lenses for both distant and close-up shows, except in low light, where the 14-54mm had a clear advantage. For the distant pictures, the 14-54mm has a maximum of 20% extra telephoto reach, more or less zoom of 2.1 compared to 1.7 X. The size and portability Weighing just over one pound, 14-54mm is more than two times heavier than an ounce July 14-42mm. A larger bag to fix that, but I really like the size and quality I have now.
The cost varies Given the current figures stadium I am sure that will change over time, the new costs of 14-42mm lens only slightly more than $ 200, a new 14-54mm lens is only a little over $ 400, or approximately twice its cost. II new version of Olympus 14-54mm lens is closer to $ 600 - but that's another story. However. . . . if bought new, as part of a package of the Olympus E-Series, the two "Kit Lens" add about $ 200 for the camera body only cost - which is about $ 100 each, which is about what they sell to use. Bottom line If you take all or most of their outdoor pictures on sunny days, I see absolutely no reason to update the lens of 14-42 mm kit lens 14-54mm. The image quality is essentially the same speed, as is the focus and precision. In addition, a larger size of the latter and the weight can make it harder for portability, and cost is two to four times higher than the kit lens, depending on how you choose to compare and buy.
However, if you want high quality images of landscapes in the days of darkness, inside buildings, or for weddings and similar events, where a flash may be of concern, then the 14-54mm may well be a necessity! And it is lighter, smaller lenses and less expensive than you can get with similar specifications. Finally, his most solid build quality and a little better telephoto and close-up capabilities could be advantages, but do not seem as important as his best performance in low light.
Am I satisfied with the upgrade? Not quite sure yet. I intend to sell my 14-42mm kit of receipt of the 14-54mm. After my comparison test, the intention of changing. Most of the time, the bag is filled with the kit lens and other "things" as described above. Glad to be a better choice for low light flexibility, but the 14-42mm is enough to keep for the moment, my deputy general walk around lens for bright days of photography.
PS Off-topic, I occasionally use a Sony VLC-DH1758 Tele-conversion lens to increase the range of my 40-150mm lens by a factor of 1.7.
